Chapter 18 ~ Nolan

The four of us rooted around inside the first house to confirm the initial cause of the fire. They had reason to believe it was electrical from the panel in the basement, and once we got a ladder down there and were able to make a trail over to the main panel, we found a surprise.

Yeah, it came from the electrical panel, but there were some suspicious circumstances with that, and the longer we chatted about it and examined what was left, we were all starting to think that it wasn’t necessarily a faulty breaker, or a surge into the house, but a specifically targeted area, in other words: arson.

It was going to be really hard to prove because there was very little left of the house, so the fire marshal was going to have some investigating to do. He’d be touching base with neighbors and running financial reports. The homeowners might have been having trouble paying the mortgage and were hoping that they could get an easy payout and be rid of the financial burden by destroying the property and blaming it on faulty wiring. That was going to be between fire marshals and the police to investigate.

It sure wouldn’t be the first time I had seen that done. It happened more often than not, but most times, we got the fire out before the property was totally demolished and we found strong solid proof that the fire was set. It would be interesting to find out what they would discover.

After we finished, we all went and checked out the second house. Chase stayed quiet for most of the time he was with us, casually taking notes and asking a question or two that might affect his estimate. I think for the most part he was just hanging with us because he thought it was interesting.

Chase and I hit the diner when we got back to Celebration, and Levi joined us right after we sat down.

“So I have it all set up,” he said as he sat down.

“What set up?” I asked as I scanned over the menu that I already knew like the back of my hand. I guess I was waiting to see if something would jump out at me.

“The double date, well, triple date now,” he laughed.

“Seriously? You got me hooked up with someone, too?” Chase asked in surprise.

“Yeah. Hey, I know a lot of women who love older men. Annie’s, I think, thirty, so not that much younger than you,” Levi replied.

“And this is Thursday night?” Chase confirmed.

“Yep. You’re still on, right, Nol?” Levi asked me.

For a second I was tempted to say no. From the moment he’d walked into the diner, I’d been tempted to tell him that I’d changed my mind. I’d agreed to the date on a whim, and as much as I wanted to move on, I just wasn’t ready.

“Hey, don’t tell me you’re backing out already,” Levi said as he leaned back in the booth.

“Nah,” I replied quickly, “I’m in.
